Are executive events worth the investment for B2B companies?

Executive events are worth considering when a focused peer experience can advance valuable account relationships at an acceptable total cost. They can support acquisition, expansion and customer engagement. There is no universal deal-size threshold: evaluate the audience, objective, likely follow-up and economics against other ways to achieve the same outcome.

Give the event one primary purpose

A dinner for new executive relationships needs a different guest list from a roundtable designed to deepen current customer engagement. Decide whether success means new conversations, additional buying stakeholders, opportunity progression or customer learning.

Evaluate before committing spend

  • Are enough suitable guests interested in the topic and format?
  • Is there a credible invitation path through peers, customers, partners or your team?
  • Does the guest mix offer value independent of a product pitch?
  • Who will own useful follow-up?
  • Would another format achieve the objective more efficiently?

Account value matters, but lower-value segments can sometimes work through lower-cost formats or multiple objectives. Conversely, a large potential contract does not make a poorly designed event worthwhile.

Separate leading indicators from return

Attendance quality and relevant follow-up show whether execution worked. Qualified opportunities and account progression show commercial contribution. Financial ROI should use realised attributable contribution and full costs, with clear assumptions.
